The potential to create realtime, collaborative design sessions within a virtual environment.
An obvious expansion of the existing online gaming communities would be to translate the use of this technology for the creation of online design communities. It is possible to create a digital model of a design and then upload it to a server which could be made available to anyone with the IP of the host computer. In this way a designer could receive feedback from people who have actually had an experience of walking through the building in realtime and at their own pace.
Alternately, the potential to use this technology as an extension to architectural offices is quite strong. Firms from around the world may schedule a time to have key designers of a project online and within the game engine at the same time. They then could discuss the design in realtime, while walking through individualy or as a group, much like a guided tour through a museum. The potential to widen the range of inputs is staggering. This type of interaction goes far beyond simple sharing of autocad and 3Dmax files over the internet, as communication is in realtime. Changes could be made and another meeting scheduled the next day, with the updated file loaded into the server.
