“Facebook has captured the essence of the university system more accurately than the learning management system”. So says Stephen Downes in his article Places to Go: Facebook in this month’s Innovate online education journal. Stephen’s quote is spot on. The LMS market has tried very hard to present the LMS as the hub of the learning experience but as Bersin reported this year, LMS customer satisfaction is low. While open source LMSs have innovated much faster and provided the richer community and collaborative functionality that customers want, people have started looking elsewhere for learning platforms that better suit their needs. And given it’s ubiquity in education, Facebook is an obvious starting point. So just how feasible is Facebook as a learning platform?
