Very very fast rhino cartoon render:
http://www.penguin3d.com/
I've tested saving out a render as a .jpg then running it through this:
http://vectormagic.stanford.edu/
and exporting an .eps file.
Then import the .eps into illustrator and all the lines and are editable !
Unzip the attached file and double click penguin to install. The serial number is in the .txt file.
made with Rhino/ Penguin/ Bongo :
Using Penguin:
1) Double click installer to install, input the serial number when prompted.
2) Launch rhino, you will now have an extra toolbar button.
3) use the render menu to set the active render to penguin.
4) left click the main render button or the penguin render button to render the active viewport.
5) right click the penguin toolbar button to set the penguin render settings e.g. sharp/sketch lines, fills or line art only.
6) select an object and click the 'object properties' toolbar button. On the material tab select basic and set the colour, opacity, reflection etc ...
7) use the lights toolbar button to set spot and point lights.
8) use File>Save on the popup render window to save the render as a jpg or bmp.
Having played with the workflow a bit here is the best and fastest way to get a good import to illustrator:
1) right click the penguin toolbar button and select the render as a sketch. On the line shape tab uncheck everything. And on the Line Color tab select single colour and set it to black.
2) in vectormagic process the image on LOW detail to get sharp lines and pick the 2 colour option (white and gray).
3) this should give you perfect eps splines with a low number of control points in illustrator. Just ungroup in illustrator and add lines, fills and add/remove control points.
Check out the test lambo pdf I created this way from a free model I downloaded.
